The local Salvation Army raised $8,180 to feed 433 families
Shamokin – The Shamokin-Coal Township Salvation Army chapter raised $8,180 through its annual Christmas fundraiser to provide chicken dinners to local needy.
The money fed 433 families representing approximately 2,000 people.
The fifth and sixth grade student council at Shamokin Area Elementary School did two fund drives toward the effort. Salvation Army Maj. Tammy Hench also thanked the community for its contributions.
Hench also thanks Irish Isle Provisions for it’s help in purchasing the chickens for $10 each, and for accepting donations at it’s location; and Brian Persing, drive chairman, for organizing the effort each year.
She offered a special thanks to UNB Bank, Mount Carmel, for it’s generous donation of $1,100 from employees and the board of directors.
The food was delivered to families with children throughout the Shamokin, Coal Township, Mount Carmel, Trevorton, Elysburg and surrounding areas.
